These shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. English Translation:
Having roamed the whole earth
I have gained the wisdom to remove my eyes
and place them under your feet, O Lord.
If you seat me close to you, I shall worship you,
and if you drive me away
I shall still remain devoted to you.
If people praise me, it is owing to your glory;
if they slander me, I shall not walk away from you.
If you are on my side, let people say what they will,
but if I turn my back on you, it will cause my death.
Again and again I sacrifice myself to my Guru;
falling at his feet, I shall please the Saint.
O Lord, poor Nanak has gone mad in his longing
for a glimpse of your darshan.
Even in a fierce storm and torrential downpour
the disciple goes for the Guru’s darshan.
The Guru’s disciple crosses the vast salty oceans
to meet his Guru.
Just as a creature dies without water,
so does a disciple die without the Guru.
Just as the earth turns beautiful after a rainfall,
so does a disciple’s heart bloom
on meeting his Guru.
I am the slave of your slaves, O Lord;
I unceasingly call upon you in my humble prayers.
Nanak prays to the Lord to unite him with the Guru
so that he can attain the bliss
that comes from the Guru alone.
