Stop relying on this one technique, you'll never play guitar the same way again. When learning how to improvise and learning guitar solos we all get taught about bending strings. But I don't think we're taught how to do it in a very tasteful way and over the last couple of years i've grown tired of bending up either a full tone or a semitone. It feels cliche, sterile and.... weirdly... too much like a guitar...

I'm on a quest to make my guitar playing and my guitar solos more listenable. I was stuck in a rut and I was getting tired of what I was hearing so I thought i'd find inspiration elswhere.

I started listening to more vocalists and that led me to listening to a lot of slide guitarists such as Derek Trucks, Joey Landreth, Ariel Posen and Blake Mills. All of these guys have an amazingly melodic and vocal sound - you can sing there solos. A big factor in that is what the slide allows them to do. So I thought i'd adopt more of a slide approach to my playing. Choosing to slide up to notes rather than bending up to them.

It's something I think we should all challenge ourselves to do more. Bending is fine when done tastefully, but hammering the pentatonic and bending that G and B String all the time leaves me feeling a little flat. Josh Smith rarely bends strings when he solos, he slides up to notes and it's a bit component for why his solos sound so smooth and effortless. That and his immense talent.

So in this video I show you a few new approaches to playing phrases and after hearing them, I doubt you'll play the same way again!
