Ash Wood kestrels

Apollo & Athena are approaching their third year together. So far this nest box, Ash Hollow, has been a favourite site for them.

Jackdaw threat

But the box is also coveted by a pair of jackdaws, who continually try to take it. On this occasion the invaders enter whilst the kestrels are not about.

Kestrels' swift response

But the kestrels are quick to notice the invasion and swoop down to defend the nest. The male, Apollo arrives at the entrance first, but his partner Athena pushes past to lead the attack.

Athena's eviction

As is usual in this kestrel relationship it is Athena, the female, who takes the lead. Watch her grab lunge at one of the jackdaws and, now assisted by Apollo, swiftly push him out of the nest. Both kestrels then take off in chase, leaving the second jackdaw alone in the nest.

But just as this jackdaw attempts to sneak out, Apollo swoops down on the attack.

It's wonderful to watch this pair working so well as a team. And a day or so later, with the nest secure, they return to their courtship.
