The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced the registration of two new political parties, bringing the total number of registered political parties in the country to twenty-one.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joaish Amupitan, made the announcement at the Commission’s first quarterly meeting with leaders of political parties.

Professor Amupitan disclosed that INEC received one hundred and seventy one letters of intent from associations seeking registration, out of which fourteen met the initial pre-qualification requirements and were invited to proceed to the next stage.

The INEC Chairman also called on political parties to intensify voter mobilisation, particularly for the ongoing collection of Permanent Voter Cards in the Federal Capital Territory scheduled to end on February 10th, 2026.

Responding on behalf of political parties, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle, urged the National Assembly to fast track the harmonization of Nigeria’s electoral laws.

Dantalle who reaffirmed IPAC's commitment to working with INEC and other stakeholders to ensure credible, transparent and inclusive elections, added that the conduct of upcoming elections would send strong signals about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.
