In the late 11th century BCE, Egypt faced a time of fragmentation and uncertainty. The once-great empire, united under powerful pharaohs, had begun to break apart. In the south, where Thebes was the spiritual heart of Egypt, a new figure emerged to guide the region through these tumultuous times—Pinedjem I, the High Priest of Amun.

Pinedjem I was born into a lineage of power and religious authority. His father, Piankh, had also been High Priest of Amun, a role that had grown more political over time. The priesthood of Amun had become the true force behind the throne in Upper Egypt. By 1070 BCE, Pinedjem ascended to his father’s position, inheriting not only religious authority but also political control over southern Egypt. The weakening grip of the pharaohs of the 21st Dynasty allowed Pinedjem to act as the de facto ruler in the region, commanding the loyalty of Thebes and its surrounding territories.
