ALA CHURCH is a large, impressive cave church near Ihlara Valley. The monumental character and elaborate façade are unlike those of any cave church in Cappadocia. This community church was built around 1000AD.

The church is located in the village of Belisırma, about 300 meters east of the river valley, immediately on the road. The site is marked on Google Maps as “Bezirhane,” referring to the neighboring linseed press.

Ala Kilise is one of the largest cave churches in Cappadocia, measuring 11 meters by 14 meters. This was a community church for the nearby village of Byzantine/Orthodox Christians. The complex has no burial graves.

ILHARA VALLEY provides a unique blend of history, nature, and culture, of any trip to Cappadocia. The valley stretches for approximately 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from Ihlara village to Selime village, making it one of the longest and deepest canyons in Cappadocia.

Carved by the Melendiz River thousands of years ago, the valley features steep canyon walls that reach up to 100 meters (330 feet) in height. The unique rock formations and lush greenery create a striking contrast with the surrounding volcanic landscape of Cappadocia.

Due to its location and the presence of the river, Ihlara Valley supports a rich variety of flora and fauna. It's a popular spot for birdwatching, particularly during the migration seasons.

The valley offers excellent hiking opportunities along a well-marked trail that follows the riverbank. The trail passes by several of the churches and monasteries, allowing visitors to explore both the natural and cultural wonders of the area.

BELISIRMA LUNCH a relaxing affair, allowing visitors to unwind and enjoy the beautiful surroundings after exploring the nearby rock-cut churches and hiking trails in Ihlara Valley.
