cellulitis is a infectious disease.
It is SPREADING INFLAMMATION of subcutaneous tissue and fascial planes.
Infection may follow a small scratch or wound or incision or insects or snake or scorpion BITE.
It can be superficial or deep.

common in diabetics, immunosuppressed people and old age.

COMMON SITES:
Lower limb
Upper limb,
Face and
Scrotum.

CAUSATIVE AGENT :
Streptococcus pyogene
Other gram positive and gram negative bacteria.

SEQUELAE :
Infection can get localised to form Pyogenic abscess.
May cause bacteraemia, septicaemia, pyaemia.
local gangrene.
Necrotising fascitis.

CLINICAL FEATURES :
Fever,
Toxicity (tachycardia, hypotension).
Swelling - diffuse & spreading.
Pain and tenderness,
Red, shiny area.
No edges, No pus, No fluctuation.

INVESTIGATION :
Complete blood count, differential count, platelet count.
Liver function test, blood urea, serum creatinine in severe cases.
Blood sugar level, urine test for ketone bodies and glycosylated hemoglobin estimation.
Deep vein thrombosis mimics cellulitis of lower limb. Venous Doppler and ultrasound of soft tissue of the lower limb may require.

TREATMENT :
Elevation of limb it helps to reduce oedema. Antibiotics.
Diabetics treated with insulin.
Dressing with glycerine magnesium sulphate.
