Veronica Reed decided to study architecture because of her passion for traveling and discovering new cultures. But, from the beginning, she was concerned with how buildings interact with natural environments. “How is it possible that we build something with disregard for natural resources?” she wonders. “Architects have been designing spaces to be bigger, more comfortable, but also disconnected from the natural environment.”

In her REMOTE Seeds talk, Veronica tells us how she learned to combine architecture, design, sustainability and tourism. Having become a hôtelière, Veronica and her husband, Renato Solines, deal daily with the challenges of balancing the objective of offering guests the best possible experience and making decisions that have an impact on the environment. With Carlota Sustainable Design Hotel in Quito, a B Corp and the first LEED-certified hotel in Ecuador, she had a long and rewarding learning process to find the right balance between intervention and respect for cultural and natural heritage.

Veronica wonders whether we are doing enough for the planet since the travel industry is responsible for 10% of all carbon emissions and the construction industry, infrastructure and building operations are responsible for almost 45%.
