With the government mulling conducting the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) in 54 central universities for UG admissions from this academic year, the issue of unrealistically high cut-offs (100% in case of certain courses at DU) may soon be a thing of the past. The CUCET is expected to standardise the assessment criteria.
Reports indicate that NTA will conduct CUCET 2021 that will eliminate the need to appear in multiple entrance exams for admission to different UG, PG and research programmes offered by central universities.
Common criteria
“CUCET will ultimately be implemented across all universities as a uniform assessment criteria. It will test students’ aptitude and domain/subject-specific knowledge based on the four broad categories of science, humanities, commerce and language. The exam will assess students’ critical thinking and analytical skills which is a marked departure from rote learning,” says RP Tiwari, vice chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, who is also the chairman of the vice chancellors’ committee formed by the UGC for CUCET. The committee is in the process of drafting the guidelines and would submit the recommendations to the Ministry of Education within a fortnight.
