You’ve just booked your dream vacation. Whether you are visiting cities, mountains, parks, or seascapes you will want to be in good physical condition so you can get the most enjoyment out of your travels. Although many folks consider a vacation as a time of relaxation, the truth is as we get older and our lives are more sedentary, even a trip to the city can be much more physically demanding than what we are used to at home.

When planning your travels, consider the distances you will be walking each day as well as the terrain. If you are exploring a city, how far will you need to walk between attractions? Will there be stairs or hills you will need to climb?

If you are traveling to a National Park or other outdoor experience, it is very important to research the areas you want to visit and understand the distances and difficulty of the trails you will wish to explore.

A runner training for a marathon trains for the event by putting in the time and distance. In the same way, you need to “train” for your adventures by putting in the time and distance. For example, a 3 day visit to a National Park will likely involve 6 hours a day of walking. Of course there will be breaks, but just using that as a reference, going for a 15 minute stroll around your neighborhood 3 times a week will not get you in condition to enjoy your time in the park.

I have put together for you a plan to help you get ready for your next adventure. Begin this workout plan at least a month before your travels.

A few of my folks from Florida have requested a workout to get them stronger for uphill trails and stairs. With most of Florida being pretty flat and most houses don’t have stairs there aren’t a lot of opportunities to train outside. In today’s video I’ll guide you through some exercises to build the strength and stamina for these walks.
