Salt is traditionally made from seawater through a natural evaporation process.
First, seawater is collected and channeled into shallow ponds called salt ponds. These ponds are usually located near the coast.
Next, the seawater is left under the sun for several days. The heat from the sun causes the water to slowly evaporate. As the water evaporates, the salt concentration increases.
After most of the water has evaporated, salt crystals begin to form at the bottom of the ponds. These crystals grow larger as evaporation continues.
Once the salt crystals are fully formed, workers harvest the salt by hand using simple tools. The salt is then washed to remove impurities.
