I said brrrr...it's cold in here! There must be a hiring freeze in the atmosphere!

Hahaha, but seriously - several companies have announced hiring freezes including Amazon, Lyft, Twitter, and Meta. This means they will not be actively recruiting or hiring new talent anytime soon. With this recent news, I figured now is the perfect time to discuss hiring freezes and educate you, if you do not know, about what they are and why companies have them.

There are a few reasons why companies may enforce a hiring freeze:

To keep costs and spending now
Poor company performance
To avoid laying off employees and staff
Budget concerns (not being able to afford to bring on new people)

While hiring freezes help companies, they can be a pain for job seekers eager to land a new role. If many companies are having hiring freezes, that can limit the number of opportunities and increase the volume of applicants for other open roles.

Here are some other ways a hiring freeze can impact your job search:

It can cause accepted offers to be retracted
It can cancel and halt your interview process
It may mean you'll need to start your job search all over again if you had no other prospects.
