For those that have not ever seen quick climbs at RAF Lakenheath weather in the real world or on our channel, you will be amazed. Ladies, gents and teddy bears, ALL the pilots, ALL departures were 'Quick Climbs'! What are Quick Climbs?

So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.

What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.

Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. Quick climbs can also be used in a combat scenario for both offensive and defensive, either getting out of a base quick from attacks or scramble to intercept. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!

What is a 'local climb'?
This is your standard departure, just a simple take-off

Can pilots just do quick climbs?
No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.

RAF Lakenheath may have the title R.A.F. but it is in fact a USAF base or even more precise, a USAFE base (United States Air Forces in Europe). It has been a US Air Force base since 1948 and it is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. The wing has four combat-ready fighter squadrons; 492d, 493d, 494th and 495th Fighter Squadrons.

The 492nd Fighter Squadron nicknamed 'Madhatters' and also locally known as the 'Bolars', fly the F15E Strike Eagle. The tradition of wearing the bowler hat has continued to present day despite the lack of official uniform regulations authorizing such wear. Despite the usual spelling of the "bowler" hat in British English, the squadron spells it as 'BOLAR".

The practice of adopting the headgear indicative of the various geographic regions the Bolars are sent to has been continued. In Turkey, each deployed Madhatter had a blue fez hat.

Which is your favourite at RAF LAKENHEATH, the F-15E or the F-35A?
The F-35s at Lakenheath are the A variant and they have some very unique characteristics of the three main variants. They have a 'Vulcan-like' howl and although they cannot hover, they are the variant of the ABC that can pull +9Gs. They are incredible to watch and hear.
