“To God Be the Glory”. A lyric video for the popular hymn “To God Be the Glory”, with piano instrumental accompaniment.
“To God Be the Glory” is another great hymn by the beloved hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby (1820 - 1915). The music is by her good friend William H. Doane (1832 - 1915), whose melodies invariably communicated the essence of Fanny Crosby’s songs to perfection.
While “To God be the Glory" may be one of the best-known hymns today, it had a rather peculiar path to popularity.
The hymn was included in the 1875 publications “Sacred Songs and Solos” by Ira Sankey, and “Brightest and Best”, by Robert Lowry and W H Doane, and that year is generally considered the year of publication. However, it must have been written at least 5 years earlier, since it was also included in Doane’s “Songs of Devotion” in 1870. Either way, the song did not gain much initial traction in the US. It did however become very popular in the UK through Dwight L. Moody and Ira Sankey’s evangelical campaigns there during the late 19th century.
For over half a century the hymn remained largely unknown in the US. Then in 1952, it was suggested to the Billy Graham team during a crusade in England. It proved very successful, so they introduced it to American audiences during their crusade in Nashville Tennessee in 1954. Only then did the hymn finally begin to gain popularity in the US, and go on to achieve worldwide popularity.
As the hymnologist W. H Reynolds commented in 1964, “It is most extraordinary that this long-forgotten American gospel song should have been imported from England and become immensely popular during the last decade.”

Lyrics
Stanza 1
To God be the glory, great things He hath done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
Stanza 2
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
(Refrain)
Stanza 3
Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.
(Refrain)
