➡️ Pulmonary Fibrosis
Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic and progressive lung disease primarily characterized by the thickening and scarring of lung tissue, which leads to a significant decline in respiratory function. This condition belongs to a larger group of lung diseases known as interstitial lung diseases, which affect the interstitium, a part of the lung's anatomic structure.
The interstitium is a lace-like network of tissue that extends throughout both lungs, supporting the alveoli and facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the bloodstream and the lungs.
➡️ Causes
The exact cause of pulmonary fibrosis is often unknown, which is why it is sometimes termed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, certain factors are known to increase the risk of developing the condition. These include environmental exposures (such as inhaling certain dusts), radiation therapy, chronic lung infections, and certain medications.
Genetics can also play a role, with some forms of pulmonary fibrosis appearing to run in families, suggesting a possible genetic predisposition. The scarring associated with pulmonary fibrosis can be particularly problematic because it is irreversible and tends to worsen over time. As the lung tissue becomes thicker and more rigid, it becomes increasingly difficult for the lungs to work effectively.
➡️ Symptoms
This leads to a decrease in the amount of oxygen that gets into the bloodstream, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and aching muscles and joints. Over time, these symptoms typically worsen, significantly impacting a person’s quality of life and ability to carry out everyday activities.
➡️ Diagnosis
Diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis involves a variety of tests. A doctor may use imaging tests such as a high-resolution CT scan to look for patterns of lung damage indicative of pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary function tests, which measure how well the lungs are working, are also common. In some cases, a lung biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis by examining a small sample of lung tissue under a microscope.
➡️ Treatment
Currently, there is no cure for pulmonary fibrosis, and the damage to the lung tissue cannot be reversed. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. Medications such as pirfenidone and nintedanib can help to reduce lung inflammation and fibrosis. Oxygen therapy might be recommended to ensure that the body gets enough oxygen.
Pulmonary rehabilitation programs can also help improve lung function and quality of life. In severe cases, a lung transplant might be considered. The course of pulmonary fibrosis can vary greatly from person to person.
