2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE: All-American luxury SUV with a PHEV powertrain

Описание к видео 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE: All-American luxury SUV with a PHEV powertrain

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been a fairly popular car in the US, but for UK buyers, this large luxury SUV has always been something of an irrelevance. It was every bit as big and as expensive as the European prestige family SUVs with which it competed for buyers' affections, buyers who - unfortunately for Jeep - didn't really need the impressive off-roading ability that the Grand Cherokee provided and the European offerings didn't. And what's more, all the things that those buyers did need their car to do were done considerably better by the competition.

The latest fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, however, which is all-new for 2023, is a little different. This is a car that's much more impressive and much more rounded than the Grand Cherokees that have gone before it, and it's a lot more compelling and credible as a result. It's more sophisticated to drive, it's of higher quality inside, and it's chock-full of technology. The fact it comes only with a plug-in hybrid powertrain - which teams a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 380 metric horsepower - also gives it an additional layer of appeal.

In this CarGurus UK video review, Deputy Editor Ivan Aistrop travels to the car's international launch event in southern Spain to take a look at the new car's quality, practicality, technology, value for money, and of course, what it's like to drive.

The CarGurus verdict
There’s a lot about the Jeep Grand Cherokee that appeals. It’s well equipped, capable in the rough, comfortable, easy to drive and spacious.

The Jeep brand also has its appeal, while the niche V8 models provide a suitably brash and entertaining alternative to staid European rivals. However, the average on-road performance and efficiency of the conventional diesel Jeeps, and their unremarkable interior, often leaves them trailing mainstream offerings.

Furthermore, despite the Jeep’s size, it’s only offered as a five-seat model, with no option to add a second row of rear seats. This, in conjunction with its high running costs and other foibles, makes it hard to recommend. On the flip side, if off-roading, towing and equipment levels are essential, a Grand Cherokee can be a good option, especially if you’re looking at less costly used examples.

Pros
Very capable off road
The cabin is spacious for five
Plenty of equipment

Cons
Very high running costs
No seven-seat version
Doesn't drive as well on the road as an Audi Q7 or a BMW X5
