Also while the topic of awful launches is still in the air, EA is responsible for Battlefront 2, Battlefield 2042, and Anthem. I’ll talk about Battlefront 2 later (you probably remember what happened), but Anthem was such a massive unexpected failure that EA has had to admit that maybe live service games aren’t the best idea. It probably doesn’t come as much of a shock that EA’s position on singleplayer games is that they’re “no longer profitable”, and it’s a shame that it took the failure of 3 different games, the death of multiple studios, and countless developer’s lives ruined through crunch wasted on these doomed projects for EA to finally acknowledge that MAYBE, they might have up. What’s crazy is I can literally look this up on google, wikipedia best selling games of all time, and there’s a large amount of these that are mostly singleplayer experiences. Literally hire me, or don’t actually oh my god don’t please.

Now, while I’d be remiss to mention the launcher that these games release on, I’ve already talked about origin a fair amount on my channel. The real question here is if I’m really petty enough to on origin for a THIRD time, YES, I love on Origin, only because it’s SO DESERVED. I don’t get how a company, as money hungry, as profitable, as large as EA could possibly put out a launcher that sucks this much. The balls on this company to still release their games on steam but REQUIRE origin to be installed on someone’s computer. Years after it’s release it’s still buggy, laggy, and an overall awful experience to deal with, and that’s with less features than it originally launched with.

It’s so bad that EA abandoned it to create a brand new launcher called “the EA app” which according to what people have said on reddit is arguably worse than origin. I’ll give them a bit of slack, it’s currently in beta and they’re trying to get people to test it out before releasing it in full, but I don’t trust EA, their track record is literally origin. The one requirement I want for a launcher is that whenever I open it I don’t feel dread, the bar is in.

Arguably one of EA’s worst offenses is their overall impact on the gaming industry as a whole. The entire Battlefront 2 debacle is a by the books example of exactly how EA introduces predatory and anti-consumer microtransactions so bad into a game, that it sparks international discussion around the idea of lootboxes and microtransactions in games. Their reddit response to the issue quickly became the most downvoted comment on reddit of all time, not just because of the predatory practices they placed in game, but because the comment overall showed just how out of touch they were not just with their own community, but with the gaming community at large.

Battlefield 2042 is their leading example of not only being out of touch, but of their overall mindset with live service games where they release a mess of a game in the now, and try to justify it overtime by fixing it later. Now admittedly I never touched Battlefield 2042, I’m in an unwinnable situation where I’m if I did touch the game, and if I don’t, so if you truly like the game and believe in it’s future, by all means use this to discredit my opinion. I personally made the decision to not touch it once all of my friends and youtube reviewers I watched told me it was not worth the $60 on launch at all. That’s not the point though, the fact that Battlefield 2042 had one of the greatest advertising campaigns for a game since Battlefield 1, and released in a state so broken that it’s Steam Player Count struggles to surpass Black Ops 3 is truly astonishing. The problems for the game were apparent in the beta, and the issues that prevail are things that are arguably fixable. The U.I. looks awful, the visibility sucks, and the actual experience of playing the game is held back by a myriad of performance issues and bugs, but that’s all fixable, but it seems that EA has already thrown in the towel and deemed the game a failure. What’s crazy is that in a post mortem meeting of the game, EA made statements that said that Battlefield 2042 released within an “acceptable state”, which is crazy that THAT’S acceptable to them.
