In Dragon Warrior III for the NES there's a way to earn gold quickly by cheating the monster arena with the Silver Harp.

By playing the Silver Harp in the monster arena, you can eliminate the top monster from the monster list before the battle starts. The monster is not just eliminated from the list, but from the battle entirely.

So not only does this narrow down your choices and make the selection easier in many cases, there's also a crazy side effect! When you make your selection, the game will place your bet on the monster listed BELOW the slot you selected, but your bet will still be multiplied according to the odds of the slot you selected.

In this example, the monsters listed were the Bomb Crag with a bet multiplier of 238.1 and the Man-Eater Chest with a multiplier of 2.2. After playing the Silver Harp, the Bomb Crag was eliminated from the list, which left an empty slot with a multiplier of 238.1 and the Man-Eater Chest with a multiplier of 2.2. By selecting the empty slot, my bet was placed on the Man-Eater Chest, but my bet was multiplied by 238.1. Furthermore, I was guaranteed to win, since the Man-Eater Chest was the only monster in the fight.

Side note, if at any point your current Gold jumps from less than 65,536 to more than 131,072 in one transaction, you will be able to carry more than the 99,999 limit, although your gold will only display as 99,999.
