Planning retirement in Australia can feel scary until you put real numbers on it. In this video, I break down the income and super balance typically needed for different standards of retirement—from relying on the Age Pension, through a Modest Lifestyle, up to a Comfortable and Luxurious Lifestyle.
Retirement standards (what life could look like)
✅ Comfortable lifestyle
Top-level private health insurance, reliable NBN + iPhone, a reasonable car + maintenance, regular leisure activities, ongoing home repairs/maintenance, professional haircuts, occasional meals out/takeaway, clothing updates, and travel (domestic annually + overseas about every 7 years).
✅ Modest lifestyle
Basic private health insurance (limited gaps), reliable NBN + Android, occasional cinema, tighter budget for repairs/appliances, budget haircuts, close watch on utilities, limited meals out, limited replacement of worn items, and a domestic trip or short breaks.
✅ Age Pension lifestyle
No private health insurance, basic mobile/limited internet, limited ability to maintain a car, rare outings, struggling with big repairs (roof/plumbing), self-haircuts, limited heating in winter, very basic clothing budget, occasional short local breaks.
Key factors used in this video: figures are framed around ages 67–74 using a 5% pension drawdown assumption.
