• Benefits: Neutering reduces risks of reproductive system diseases like mammary and testicular cancers and certain undesirable behaviors.

• Risks: Early neutering is associated with modest increase risks of hip dysplasia, cruciate ligament damage, immune-mediated disorders, urinary incontinence, and some cancers.

• Weight as a Factor: Neutering can predispose dogs to weight gain, potentially exacerbating disease risks.

• Complex Associations: The relationship between neutering and inherited conditions varies, with many effects being minimal or inconclusive. Breed and sex play a role. For example, Neutering was not found to worsen a risk for hip dysplasia for German shepherd dogs or rottweilers, and in some breeds, such as labs, neutering was associated with reduced risk of hip dysplasia. But for larger breeds, like Great Danes, Newfoundlands, St. Bernards, and more, neutering was associated with an increased risk. Females appear to be at greater risk for many of the health risks associated with early neutering than males. There isn’t a generalizable trend across breeds. Any recommendation for the age of neuter should be based on the individual dog.
