SuperNatural Rhythms | Modular Composing | Episode 08

Making rhythms on the modular can be great fun. You can build your ultimate 808 or 909, and the BitBox will definitely make you a 1010. You can go from natural through unnatural beats, and eventually end up with a supernatural kit. I've been wondering what would turn a pattern into a 'groove' and came to the simple conclusion that a pattern is an order of events, and a groove is an enjoyable feel. It's the perception of a pattern, and I'd say it also needs a bass. It doesn't need to be complex, the best grooves are built around a 4 on the floor, but with a magical imperfection and energy only a human can add. Let's just see where we'll end up with voltage.

Moving away from the 'grid' and 'clock' gives plenty of room for experimentation, and you'll find out a complex pattern doesn't always groove. You can listen in awe to a great drum solo, but you can't dance to it.

In this video I'll use 0-CTRL and Maths (?) to make beats that don't care much about a grid, and automate it with StolperBeats where more quickly becomes less if you overdo it with randomization. It's also great to use the WMD drum module synthesis where drum sounds are created with synthesis, grains and physical models. Not sure if they're back in stores, but I am super happy to see WMD is back in business.
