The 16.34-km Pingtan cross-strait highway-railway bridge is the world's longest cross-strait highway-railway bridge as well as one of the most difficult bridges to build in China. The bridge is located in the Taiwan Strait, which is one of the three major storm surge areas in the world, with the average number of gale days above level 6 each year exceeding 300. It has very limited effective construction time and has been called as “the exclusion zone of bridge-building” by some engineers.
