A man who jumped a White House fence in march, was shot dead after he attacked a courthouse deputy sheriff with a knife Tuesday morning in Chester, Pennsylvania.

At around 11:50 a.m., 34-year-old Curtis Smith went into the Chester County Justice Center on Tuesday, Chester County District Attorney Thomas P. Hogan said. Upon entering, Smith charged passed the metal detectors and slashed at a courthouse deputy sheriff with a knife.

Another deputy then opened fire, wounding Smith, Hogan said.

Smith received first aid at the scene before being taken to Paoli Hospital, where he was declared dead. The wounded deputy was seen later on a stretcher being loaded onto an ambulance. Hogan said he was being treated for wounds on the arm and the hand.

The courthouse was locked down for a brief period following the incident, reported NBC 10 News. "The sheriff's did their jobs, the lockdown went perfectly," said Hogan.
