I thought I'd share with you my Jester makeup because she's such a fun character to become, and body paint can be a lil tricky to work with. I'm by no means a professional, but I've picked up a few things here and there!

There are a bunch of different types of body paint you can use; I tend to stick to water-based because it's easier to wash off, but grease based body paint can stay on better.
I use Snazaroo because it'a quite cheap in Australia, but other popular brands are Mehron and Ben Nye. There are lots of great articles online about body paint for cosplay, so give it a search if you want more options! (https://createlet.com/best-body-paint... - like this one for instance)
Getting good with body paint is honestly mostly practice. You can learn what types of brushes or sponges you feel most comfortable with, and don't panic if your first try isn't very good, that's what tests are for!
Especially when working with water-based paint, you have to be carful when applying after the base layer of paint. As I mentioned, just dab where you want it to go, and if you disturb the base layer, take a breath, let it dry and then go back in softly with a sponge and a bit of a thicker consistency of the body paint.
Don't be afraid to go hard with highlighting and contouring. It really adds to the final look and will stop you looking washed out in photographs.
Also, don't be afraid to Photoshop! If it's an outfit that shows lots of skin I usually just 'shop whatever is not blue, and match it to my face and neck. You can still be colourful without body paint, it's easy to find tutorials online for various Photoshop techniques.
