The Grimm Brothers' version of Cinderella, called "Aschenputtel," is a dark fairy tale. A kind-hearted girl is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters after her mother dies. She finds solace and help from a white bird that lives in a hazel tree she planted on her mother's grave.

When a prince holds a three-day festival to find a bride, Aschenputtel's stepfamily forbids her from going. However, with the help of the birds, she receives beautiful dresses and attends the ball each night. The prince falls in love with her but she escapes each time. On the final night, she loses her golden slipper.

The prince uses the slipper to find her. The stepsisters, desperate to fit into it, cut off parts of their feet at their mother's urging. A pair of doves from Aschenputtel's tree warn the prince of the blood, revealing their deceit. When Aschenputtel tries on the slipper, it fits perfectly. At her wedding, the same doves peck out the eyes of the stepsisters, blinding them as punishment for their cruelty.
