Tens of thousands of migrants on Thursday (January 31) were flooding out of China's capital with hefty suitcases in tow to journey home to celebrate the Chinese New Year with their families.

Millions of Chinese work in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, and Lunar New Year is the only time of the year when many of them will make the long journey to rural and far-flung towns to see their loved ones for a reunion dinner.

Lin Fen was travelling back to Xinjiang with her daughter and said the journey would take her three days. "We have a lot of luggage and it is tiring, but we are in good mood," Lin said.

The Lunar New Year holiday begins on Monday (February 4), and the 40-day travel frenzy surrounding the week-long holiday will last till March 15. Nearly 3 billion trips nation-wide are expected, according to the Ministry of Transport, stretching railways, roads and airways to their limits. Around 504 million trips have already been made in the first week of the travel rush.
