The Automation group from Jacobs University won the 2012 Virtual Manufacturing Automation Competition held during the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in St. Paul, MN, USA. The team relegated their competition to second place and beyond.

Competitors at the Virtual Manufacturing Automation Competition ( see http://www.vma-competition.com/ ), which ended on May 17, had to develop software that enables companies to create optimal pallets given a number of articles with a certain weight. Palletizing, or packing rectangular boxes of various sizes onto pallets, is a frequently encountered task in many commercial scenarios, e.g., shipment of goods. The palletizing are treated in the context of the IEEE ICRA 2012 Virtual Manufacturing Automation Competition, which was held from May 15 to May 17 at the world largest scientific conference on Robotics and Automation.
