This is the Chembarambakkam lake, which was once a major water source for Chennai city but has now completely dried up. Madras High Court has blamed the government for passively waiting for monsoon rather than taking proactive measures to solve the crisis.
Facts suggest that this crisis has not occurred in a day. This is a result of years of negligence by various administrations. Right now, Chennai is depending on two desalination plants. Chennai metro water is also bringing water from abandoned quarries and some from agricultural wells. Efforts are on to bring water from other districts like Vellore.
