Coming into the season last year, I’d venture to guess the expectations for most fans of the Indiana Pacers weren’t all that high. They were coming off of a season in which they barely finished with a winning record and were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers, although they did only lose those 4 games by a combined 16 points. The problem was, that was all with all-NBA wing Paul George on the roster, a player that had since been traded away, as was requested, and the guys they got in return - Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis... weren’t seen as fair compensation at the time.
But after getting off to a rough 6 and 8 start through mid November, the team figured it out under second year head coach Nate McMillan, and finished with a record 6 games better than they had the previous year... good enough for 5th place in the Eastern conference playoffs... led mostly by the sudden emergence of Oladipo as an all-star and eventual all-NBA selection.
