The Rio Grande Southern was a railroad with a rather... turbulent history, at one point falling so deep into financial woes that they could not operate any conventional revenue trains. This, combined with an obligation to maintain US Mail contracts, led to the birth of the Galloping Geese. The Galloping Geese were a fleet of seven self propelled railcars custom built by the Rio Grande Southern in various configurations, and eventually became the saving grace of the railroad in its lowest times. Eventually the RGS regained its footing and regular revenue freights pulled by steam locomotives resumed, but the Geese still found their place on the line handling light duty and passenger service until the end of the RGS. Galloping Goose 5 is an operating survivor owned and maintained by the Galloping Goose Historical Society in Dolores, CO, and the group regularly hosts excursions on both the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec for tourists to experience what it was like riding through the scenic San Juan Mountains. This video features Galloping Goose 5 on the Cumbres & Toltec in October of 2022 as part of the aforementioned yearly outings, climbing up the 4% grade to Cumbres Pass. Now, please enjoy this video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!

This video was filmed on October 2nd, 2022.
