Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program provides a way for Canadians with ecologically sensitive land to protect nature and leave a legacy for future generations.

Since 1995, Canadians have donated over one billion dollars’ worth of ecologically sensitive land through the the Government of Canada's Ecological Gifts Program. Over 1,700 ecological gifts have been donated across Canada, protecting more than 200,000 hectares of wildlife habitat.

Do you own ecologically sensitive land?
You can help protect this precious space for future generations, and receive significant tax benefits, by donating your land through Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program.
Over 1600 ecological gifts have been made across Canada, protecting more than 200,000 hectares of natural areas and wildlife habitat.
You can donate your land, or an interest in land, such as a covenant, servitude or easement.
These ecological gifts help protect ecosystems, wildlife habitats, and the species at risk that live there, forever.
Land can be donated to land trusts, other environmental charities, and governments.
Environment and Climate Change Canada certifies the ecological sensitivity of the land, approves the organization receiving the donation, and determines the land’s fair market value.
Ecological gifts not only help protect our environment but also provide valuable income tax benefits, including an exemption from the tax on capital gains for individual and corporate donors. And the income tax benefits can be carried forward for up to 10 years.
Donors should discuss the donation with potential recipients, and obtain independent legal and financial advice.
