It was discovered by Belgian biologist Christian de Duve in the late 1940s and is named after the Greek word "lysos", which means "to unbind". The lysosome has an important role in cellular function.
The lysosome is a membrane-bound organelle found in most animal cells. The lysosome is characterized by the presence of hydrolytic enzymes that can break down large molecules, and many times, the organelles themselves.
