Transcending Regional Boundaries Across Virtual Realities: Indo-Pacific Region

The Miriam College Department of International Studies (MC-IS) launched a virtual Lecture Series with Regional Experts titled, “Transcending Regional Boundaries Across Virtual
Realities.” It began on February 12, 2021 with Dr. Baogang He, the first speaker of the event.
Dr. He is notable for his specialization in Chinese and Asian politics, including Asian regionalism, federalism, and multiculturalism. Currently, he is the International Relations
Chair of Deakin University, a public university in Geelong, Australia.

Dr. He emphasized the contestation of China and the United States in the Indo-Pacific Region.
He highlighted four key issues namely: (1) the presence of the new regionalism strategy in
global power contestation in the 21st century; (2) a Chinese perception of the Indo-Pacific
region and its regionalism building; (3) regionalism and its modification to the logic of
alliance; and (4) the prospects of Indo-Pacific regionalism in Asia.
