I have upgraded from a Tillett P1 rib protector to the Tillett P1 Defender, and in this video I explain why the move makes sense — not just for European racing, but realistically for the future of UK karting as well.

The P1 Defender wraps fully around the body and includes integrated chest protection, helping to spread load and impact across the rib cage rather than concentrating force in one or two areas. Under FIA regulations, this higher level of protection is already required in Europe, and it’s very likely that these safety standards will filter into the UK in the near future. If you’re buying a rib protector now, it makes sense to invest in the higher-spec option rather than having to upgrade again later.

The P1 Defender builds on everything I liked about the original P1, adding chest protection and extra coverage without restricting movement or comfort. Compared to other rib protectors, it feels more stable, more supportive, and less intrusive on track.

After testing it, I’d rate the Tillett P1 Defender 9 out of 10. If you’re planning on racing in Europe — or want to future-proof your safety equipment as regulations evolve — this is a very solid upgrade.
