Transition of grade eight learners to senior secondary on course as government commits to construct 17,000 classrooms

The government has announced it will construct approximately 17,000 classrooms as it prepares for the transition of grade eight learners to senior secondary school in 2025.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang has said the government, through the support of Development Partners is constructing 11,000 classrooms.

“We are also working with the National Government Constituency Development Fund to construct another 7,000 classrooms so that we shall be able to have 17,000 classrooms by the end of the year to accommodate our grade nine learners”, said Dr. Kipsang.

The Principal Secretary said “We are on course and preparing to ensure that our children who will be moving from grade eight to nine next year are properly taken care of”.

He said the government is additionally recruiting 20,000 Teachers to support teaching at grade nine.

Dr. Kipsang made the remarks at the Moi Girls High School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County during the official opening of the 96th Kenya National Drama and Music Festival.

He said the Government is fully focused on the promotion of the creative arts, encompassing music, dance, elocution drama, film and the visual arts.

“These are not just forms of entertainment, they are powerful tools for cultural expression, social commentary, and economic growth”, stated the Principal Secretary.

Dr. Kipsang said the government recognizes the immense potential of the creative sector and will be investing in state-of-the-art cultural infrastructure such as halls, art galleries, and studios.

He said the facilities will provide spaces for artists to create, collaborate, and showcase their work to local and international audiences.
