June 30, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) passed the controversial Hong kong National Security Law.



This suffocated Hongkong's "One Country, Two Systems", less than halfway through the promised 50-year.


Under the law, Individuals found with secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces may face life imprisonment under closed-door trials by the CCP.


This law can also be applied retrospectively to arrests made in the past.

July 1, thousands of Hongkongers protested against the law, with police arresting around 370.


The famous slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times" has now been banned.


‘It’s worse than the worst scenario imagined’, said Jimmy Lai, founder of the popular Apple Daily newspaper.


But not only Hongkong's freedom is at stake.


Article 38 states that individuals outside Hong Kong who violate the security law would also be subject to prosecution.


Analysts warn that citizens of other countries are exposed to risk of extradition to China.


Currently, there are over 50 countries with extradition treaty with either Hong Kong or China.


In response, Canada has suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong.


Australia and Taiwan have warned their citizens against travelling to China.


Think tanks in 39 countries has signed a letter in support of the Hong Kong people and condemning the CCP.


“This is a global tragedy”, Fred McMahon, the Dr. Michael A. Walker Chair of Economic Freedom research at the Fraser Institute, told The Epoch Times.


"It tells everyone who hasn’t already gotten the message that any treaty with the CPC [Communist Party of China] is worthless," he added.
