Elagabalus, or Heliogabalus (203–222 CE), became emperor at age 14 after his grandmother Julia Maesa declared him Caracalla’s son and defeated Macrinus. In Rome, he imposed the cult of the Syrian god Elagabal, built a temple on the Palatine Hill, officiated in women’s clothing, and “married” the god to Vesta. He held banquets with wine-filled pools, showers of petals, and wild beasts on the loose; he married five times (including to a Vestal Virgin), sought surgery to change his sex, and scandalized the Senate. On March 13, 222, at 18, he was killed along with his mother by the Praetorian Guard; his name was erased in a damnatio memoriae.
