In a major case that is expected to dominate the political debate in the country, oil PSU ONGC has alleged in the Delhi High Court that Mukesh Ambani-owned RIL had exploited Rs 30,000-crore worth of gas from its block in the Krishna-Godavari basin.
RIL, on its part has not disputed the claim that it exploited the gas from the KG Basin block of the PSU. It however contended before Delhi High Court's Justice Manmohan that an independent expert panel be assigned the task to determine whether its gas well is connected to that of ONGC and what is the quantum of the gas it has drawn.
The Centre's lawyer Neeraj Chaudhari told the court that as per a meeting held between the two companies and the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), a decision to appoint an expert panel has been taken. The court asked ONGC to file its counter to the RIL and the Centre's response and listed it for further hearing on August 12.
The legal battle between RIL and ONGC will be keenly watched as it unfolds given the backdrop of the accusations that RIL promoter Mukesh Ambani is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and funded his campaign blitz in the run-up to the Lok Sabha 2014 elections.
