National City — A burglary suspect was taken into custody late Monday night after neighbors reported suspicious activity and police located the man hiding in a backyard.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on December 29, 2025, in the 900 block of East Second Street. Neighbors called 911 reporting a man casing the area and breaking into vehicles, according to police.

An officer with the National City Police Department was nearby and spotted a suspect near Paradise Valley Road and Potomac Street in Southeast San Diego. When officers attempted contact, the suspect fled on foot, hopping fences through multiple properties.

The suspect eventually hid in a backyard near a shed. The San Diego Police Department ABLE helicopter was in the area and located the suspect from the air. Despite repeated callouts from the helicopter, the suspect refused to surrender.

Officers later made contact and found the suspect hiding under a mattress in a backyard, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

The case remains under investigation by the National City Police Department. Information was provided on scene by an NCPD sergeant.
