Changunarayan Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located on a small hill east of Kathmandu in Bhaktapur district. This is one of the most famous temples of Bishnu. A large number of devotees visit Narayan's temples especially during the Harishayani Ekadashi of Ashadh month and Haribaodhini Ekadashi of Kartik. During four months Lord Bishnu takes Sannyas to sleep. In front of the temple there is a beautiful statue of Garuda from the 5th century Lichhavi period. This Garuda idol is different from other Garuda idols found elsewhere because it does not have wings, so it resembles a human being.
The Garuda is the baahan (carrier) of Lord Bishnu, and it is interesting to note that all Bishnu temples have the celestial bird seated on its knee with folded palms in front of the temple. Full of wood and stone, this temple is one of the most elaborate in the Kathmandu Valley. Changunarayan Temple is a two-storey pagoda structure dedicated to Lord Bishnu in the incarnation of Narayan. In which there is a gold gajur, the four corners of the temple are decorated with four small pagodas. This temple is located at a height of 1600 meters. The temple is decorated with ten incarnations of Narayan. There are many legends about the origin of the temple. Among them, one of the local residents says that about 400 years ago in Nepal, a famous warrior named Changu defeated another warrior, Pranjal. Therefore, the temple is built as a tribute to Changuka's victory. Located on the top of the hill, this Changunarayan temple is also known as Dolagiri in the local language. The temples are located between the forest and the settlement. Which is known as Changu or Changunarayan village. This temple is considered one of the oldest temples. Its history is about 3000 years old and it was built in the 4th century by King Mandev of Lichchavi dynasty.

In this temple, there are many temples and idols of gods and goddesses with intricate stone carvings completed between 5th and 12th centuries. There are pillars in the courtyard of the temple. In which there are sankha, chakra, gada and padma (lotus). There is also a statue of Lord Bishnu in the temple complex. The temple also has small shrines dedicated to Chinnamasta (headless goddess), Badeshwor Mahadev, Laxmi Narayan and Kileshwor. Behind the 12th century garuda in the northeast corner of the fire there is a beautiful bas-relief of Lord Bishnu. Changunarayan is a holy place mainly for the Vaishnavas. The temple’s structure includes four doorways, one facing each direction. All of the entrances are guarded by a pair of lions, sarabhas, gryphons, and elephants on either side.
