Описание к видео Storm of the Century in Michigan Jan 26, 1978

In this video taken with a super 8 film camera, I am showing one of billions of snow drifts that left Northern Michigan paralyzed for about 5 days. The worse winter storm of the 20th century in Michigan. Many areas got 52 inches of snow, with hurricane force winds of over 75mph. It appeared that Muskegon had the most extreme measurements, with many other areas hit almost as hard. I lived about 80 miles from Muskegon and got hit just as hard. Traverse City was declared CLOSED, and over 100,000 vehicles were abandoned on the road in the state. Personally, I was stuck in my house for 5 days as the roads had close to 40inches of hard packed snow on them.
It took a few days, but I managed to shovel a pathway from the garage to the road. It was just a waiting game for the plow to come through. On the 4th day, a ploy managed to come down the road and buried my driveway with snow. I had to shovel it out again. That took another day. On the 6th day we were able to get out on the road with the car.
Less that a week before the storm, we got another nasty storm with 24 inches of snow. We were stuck in the house for a day and our visitors had to spend the night.
So we were hit with a one, two punch, with the second punch being the knockout.
I remember watching plow trucks ramming snow drifts, then backing up and ramming again, and again. That was the only way they could get it to move. Some of the drifts were easily 12 feet of thick, hard packed snow.
Much wildlife perished as they could not get to food. The Pheasants nearly died out in the area.
This storm is still very much a topic of conversation in the state. Most people have a good story about it. I am glad I got it on super 8. No sound, but I narrated it. I transferred the film to vhs about 25 years ago. I dug the old VHS tape out last night and checked it out as I have not seen it in years. It was in pretty good shape, so I transferred it to digital and uploaded. I know that there was a lot of topics recently with this recent storm, but this was the mother of all storms in Michigan, Ohio, and many other states. It had the lowest barometer reading of any non-hurricane storm in the 20th Century. Lake Michigan froze over that year too. That does not happen frequently. Also, this is when the scientists were warning of an upcoming ice age as the globe was cooling. This cooling theory made the news frequently back then.
I don't think I rode my Triumph that day. Sorry.
