Coxa valga and coxa vara are conditions affecting the angle between the femoral neck and shaft (femoral neck-shaft angle or FNSA). Coxa valga is characterized by an angle greater than 135°, making the femur appear straighter, while coxa vara involves an angle less than 120°, resulting in a sharper bend. These deformities can impact the musculoskeletal system and affect movement and stability.

Coxa Valga :

Definition: Femoral neck-shaft angle greater than 135°.

Appearance: The femur is straighter than normal.
Potential Impacts: Increased stress on the knee joint, potential for knee osteoarthritis, and hip instability.

Possible Causes: Congenital, developmental, or acquired due to injury, cerebral palsy, or other conditions.

Coxa Vara:

Definition: Femoral neck-shaft angle less than 120°.

Appearance: The femur has a sharper bend.
Potential Impacts: Leg shortening, difficulty walking, and increased risk of femoral neck stress fractures.

Possible Causes: Congenital, developmental, metabolic bone diseases (like Paget's disease), post-traumatic (from improper healing of fractures), or sequelae of conditions like Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

General Information:

Normal FNSA: Typically ranges from 120° to 135° in adults, but can be higher at birth and in children.
