In his new book, “Too Hot to Handle: A Global History of Sex Education” (Princeton University Press, 2015), Jonathan Zimmerman argues that despite the steady liberalization of attitudes toward sex, sex education has remained controversial for educators and parents. Surveying developments in the United States and across the globe, he finds that sex education in Scandinavia and continental Europe, for example, is aimed at helping students develop and understand their sexuality, whereas in the United States it is usually aimed at prevention of negative outcomes.

Touching on both practical and political implications, Zimmerman also addresses the effect of increased immigration on European sex education programs, how debates over the content of sex education creates unlikely political allies, and what sex education looks like in the developing world.
