The game does require the Ram Expansion Unit (REU) of at least 256k. With 512k or higher you can preload the whole game into ram. The REU is an official commodore unit we could have all bought back in the day to level up the C64 but it never caught on. Just maybe if we had a game of this calibre to show it off things may have turned out differently.

What a conversion though C64. Game of the year, game of the decade!! It looks and plays just like the Master System game. Some levels seem shorter and not as many enemies around, but that may just be my ageing memory of the original. The maps are similar enough that I know my way around the maps.

In the longplay I open with the manual and credits. Pause the video if you want to read it as I pretty much flick through it. play through all levels and collect all emeralds in order t show the good ending. Maybe I spend too much time collecting rings I don't need, but that's the game and allows me show the bonus levels occasionally where lives and continues can be collected. Once the game is complete I cut to the final level and show it without collecting the emerald for the bad ending.

Overall a fantastic conversion and leaves me wanting more. Bring on Sonic 2!
