Visapur Fort is a historic hill fort in Maharashtra, India, located near the village of Visapur in the Pune district. Standing at an elevation of approximately 1,084 metres (3,556 ft), it is part of the larger Lohagad-Visapur fortification and is renowned for its expansive plateau, massive stone walls, and scenic trekking routes that come alive during the monsoon.

Historical Significance
Built By: Constructed between 1713 and 1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire.

Strategic Purpose: It was built at a higher elevation than the neighbouring Lohagad Fort to provide better surveillance and a backup military post for guarding the trade routes connecting the Deccan Plateau to the Konkan coast.

British Conquest: In 1818, during the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the British used Visapur’s higher ground to bombard Lohagad with cannons, forcing the Marathas to flee. Subsequently, the British blew up the fort's main gateways to prevent its future use.

Key Features & Attractions
Waterfall Stairs: During the monsoon, water gushes down the stone steps leading to the fort, creating a "waterfall trek" that is a major draw for adventure seekers.

Hanuman Carvings: Large, intricate rock-cut carvings of Lord Hanuman (Maruti), the patron deity of the fort, are scattered across the site.

Ruined Palace: The remains of a large stone-built house are known as the Peshwa's Palace.

Ancient Well: A deep well on the fort is traditionally believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.

Cannons: Several iron guns and cannons remain on the fort, including a famous ten-foot-long gun near the north wall marked with a "Tudor Rose and Crown".

Visiting Information
Best Time to Visit: June to September (Monsoon) for lush greenery and waterfalls, or October to February for pleasant weather and clear views.

Trek Difficulty: Medium. The ascent typically takes 2 to 3 hours from the base village of Malavli.

How to Reach:
By Train: Take a local train from Pune or Mumbai and get off at Malavli Railway Station, which is about 3 km from the base.

By Road: Accessible via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway; exit at Malavli and drive to the Bhaja Caves parking area.
