In May 1967, ITN reported from Stockholm on the gathering of a private people's tribunal, to exert pressure on the US for its military policy in the ongoing Vietnam War. Influenced by the Nuremberg Trials, the Russell Tribunal was organised by British Philosopher Bertrand Russell and chaired by a series of leftist intellectuals including Jean-Paul Sartre, Lelio Basso, Simone de Beauvoir, Vladimir Dedijer, Ralph Schoenman, Isaac Deutscher, Günther Anders, and Lázaro Cárdenas. Russell had recently completed his book giving an 'unvarnished truth' about the war in Vietnam, with the conclusion that a trial was essential to assess the scale of atrocities being conducted by the US.

Akin to a show trial, the Russell Tribunal would be criticised for ignoring war crimes on the side of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the Viet Cong, though Russell and Sarte would maintain in this footage and beyond that 'the actions of an organisation of poor peasants... and those of an immense army backed by a highly organised country' could never be judged equally.
