Texas wasn’t always part of the United States.

In the early 1800s, Texas history took a different path when Texas belonged to Mexico. As American settlers moved into Mexican Texas, tensions grew quickly. When Mexico banned slavery, conflict escalated, and rebellion erupted.

In 1836, after famous battles like the Alamo, Texas declared independence and became the Republic of Texas. For nearly ten years, Texas existed as an independent nation, with its own president, army, and flag—separate from both Mexico and the United States.

The U.S. government hesitated over Texas annexation due to slavery debates, Mexico’s threats of war, and fears of expanding the nation too fast. This delay made Texas one of the most controversial topics in U.S. history at the time.

Finally, in 1845, the United States annexed Texas. Texas became the 28th U.S. state, and remains the only state to join the United States after being an independent country.
