Some takeaways from me:

• First impression: Need more information about each case study at a glance so that I know - as a hiring manager - which one is going to be most worth the time spent reviewing it. Is it UX? UI? Web? Web app? Mobile app? Strategy? What should I expect to see in this case study?

• About You: Use that information on your about page to create a more compelling intro at the top of your portfolio. You've got some great previous experience that means you'll excel in a UX or Product Design role, so make sure your future employers know about those transferrable skills immediately!

• Case Study Factory: We fell into the usual format of a case study, but that's not going to be the storytelling that gets folks to engage with your portfolio. Tell me more about how this engaged the users you targeted. Who is a user whose story we can follow? We don't need a user persona necessarily, we want to know how it worked out for them.

• Accessibility of Links: Make sure your links are visibly distinct from the text around them. Users with low vision may not easily distinguish between links and surrounding text without sufficient contrast. If users can't see your 'contact me' call to action then they won't click on it.

• Accessibility of Targets: There were some quality quotes on there from users, but to navigate to see them was nearly impossible due to the target size of 8px by 8px.

• Outcomes Over Output: Show me what you decided and why, rather than what you produced. Most of our design work doesn't see the light of day, and that's okay. What's more important as knowledge workers is that we can make good decisions.

Hey Team! Today we have another in the series of Early Career Designer Portfolio Reviews, where I conduct a kind of UI assessment called a Cognitive Walkthrough. I review an early career designers portfolio and resume and give feedback for ways to improve it as they look for a job in the UX industry.

I’m Maigen Thomas, and my mission is to empower early-career technologists with the real-world skills and industry-recognized experience they need to reach their next level of socioeconomic success.
You can find out more about me at maigenthomas.com

I publish weekly at www.patreon.com/maigenux where I hope you'll join an awesome crew of folks as I provide motivation and mentorship, build an apprenticeship agency to employ early-career designers and teach UX as I do UX.
