The United States did not support recent Israeli strikes on Syria, the State Department said on Thursday (Jul 17), as Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa accused Israel of trying to fracture the country and pledged to protect its Druze minority. Amin Saikal, distinguished visiting fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, tells CNA’s Asia First that the current situation is “a challenge” to the new Syrian government as well as “a very serious challenge” to the US after its recognition of the country. He adds that Israel’s continuous bombing of Syria would cause "enormous difficulties" for the Syrian government to consolidate power and unite the country.
