We will provide with a general system overview and show you how to properly install & configure your memory. This 2U HP server supports two processors utilizing Intel E5-2600 v1 or v2 series CPUs. This is an LGA2011 Socket. There are 24 DIMMs slots in total. You can insert 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB modules. Speeds supported include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz and all the way up to 1866MHz. DDR2 and DDR4 memory will not work with the DL380p G8. You also cannot use desktop memory. Simply will not work.

There are two types of RAM accepted by the HP DL380p Gen 8 server: ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). This is very important. The type of RAM you use will effect the total max scalability as well as how you configure your HP server. For starters, you can max out at 768GB (24 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-14900L 1866MHz with Load Reduced Server Memory. On the other hand, ECC Registered memory will only max out at 512GB (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3L-12800R 1600MHz ECC Reg Server Memory. This means not only can you have a higher overall capacity with LRDIMMs, you can also have a faster speed. I will note you can use 1866MHz for 4GB 8GB or 16GB ECC Reg. There are no 1866MHz 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg DIMMs. They simply were never invented.

The reason for only 16 DIMMs with ECC Reg is due to the fact all 32GBs DDR3 ECC module are 4Rx4 (Quad Rank). This is key. ECC Reg is subject to the Rank Rule. If you go over 8 ranks per memory channel, then this breaks the rank rule for HP’s DL380p Gen 8 and the system will throw errors.
